Bonding Protocol & Tray Insertion Technique

This article includes the bonding protocol and tray insertion technique for bonding with LightForce.

Bonding Protocol For LightForce Brackets

See the following articles for applying adhesive and recommended materials for LightForce.

Trial Fitting IDB trays for mixed dentition, eruption, and spacing cases

    • Important to note you may need to trial fit the tray before applying the adhesive prior to bonding. Check to make sure the tray is seating completely on the teeth and there is no rocking upon insertion. If the tray does not fit, cut/segment the tray until it fits. See Tray Segmentation instructions in the Rebonding article. Rebonding Protocol & Tray Segmentation Instructions
    • After Trial fitting the trays clean the LightForce bracket pads with cotton tip with acetone and compress air dry before applying adhesive.

Prep the Patient for Bonding

  1. Prophy/Pumice/Clean teeth
  2. Place nola cheek retractors with tongue hold & suction, dry, and isolate the patient’s teeth from saliva.
  3. Etch the teeth using the LightPlan to prep the precise area where the bracket is being bonded. Apply the Etch 6-6.
  4. Rinse & Dry the etchant after the recommended amount of time from the manufacturers instructions.
  5. Apply one coat of primer to the posterior teeth first & light cure for 1-2 seconds. (Note: wait to apply assure plus to the anterior teeth until after the posterior brackets have been bonded)

Tray Insertion Technique

When light curing, it is recommended to position the tip mesial and distal for '1 beep' or 3-5 seconds each for a total of 6-10 seconds per bracket. Each interproximal surface applies curing for the next tooth's cure time.

For example a light cure mesial to a LR6 is also light curing the distal of the LR5, the technician will then move to the interproximal of the LR5 (mesial) & LR4 (distal) and so on.

  1. Insert lower right posterior segment first, (LR3-LR6) Hold tray with finger pressure on the occlusal surface only and Light cure each bracket 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal (leave tray in)
  2. Insert lower left posterior segment first, (LL3-LL6) Hold tray with finger pressure on the occlusal surface only and Light cure each bracket 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal (leave tray in)
  3. Insert upper right posterior segment, (UR3-UR6) Hold tray with finger pressure on the occlusal surface only and Light cure 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal (leave tray in)
  4. Insert upper left posterior segments, (UL3-UL6) Hold tray with finger pressure on the occlusal surface only and Light cure 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal (leave tray in)
  5. Remove all posterior IDB trays with scaler or fingers lifting from the lingual and removing the tray towards the buccal.
  6. Check for excess flash or for any IDB tray left bonded to the teeth or stuck under the tie wings of the brackets with instrument and check interproximal contacts with floss.
  7. Final light cure brackets 3-5 seconds or "1 beep" per tooth
  8. Dry anterior teeth and check to make sure teeth are chalky white. Then add Assure plus to the facial surface and light cure the primer for 1-2 seconds.
  9. Insert lower anterior segment (LL2-LR2) Hold tray with finger pressure on the incisal surface only and Light cure 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal (leave tray in)
  10. Insert upper anterior segment (UL2-UR2) Hold tray with finger pressure on the incisal surface only and Light cure 3-5 seconds mesial & 3-5 seconds distal.

  11. Remove both anterior IDB trays with scaler or fingers lifting from the lingual and removing the tray towards the facial.
  12. Check for excess flash or for any IDB tray left bonded to the teeth or stuck under the tie wings of the brackets with scaler or explorer and check interproximal contacts with floss.
  13. Final Light cure brackets 3-5 seconds or "1 beep" per tooth
